PROF. MARIN VARBANOV

WORLD FAMOUS ARTIST, TAPESTRY MAKER

Marin Varbanov was born on 20.09.1932 in the town of Oriahovo. In 1951 he is accepted at the Academy of Arts in Sofia and is taught by Prof. Penkov. He continues his education at thе Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, specialty Decorative Textile and Tapestry Art with Prof. Chai Fei. In 1960 he becomes a lecturer in Sofia, and in 1967 he is already an assistant-professor in textile in “N. Pavlovich” Higher Institute of Applied Arts in Sofia. Later he establishes the specialty Textile in the Academy of Arts in Sofia, and some time after that, the tapestry section at New South University, Sidney, Australia. His works are mainly in the sphere of the wall carpet. He also works in collaboration with Pierre Cardin. In 1986 Varbanov founds the Institute of Modern Textile at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, which is named after him.

Marin Varbanov promotes the use of natural materials in the creation of tapestries in order for the Bulgarian spirit and Bulgarian traditions to be preserved. He displays his works in exhibitions in Paris, China, Brussels, Prague, Moscow, Berlin, Warsaw, Lausanne, Washington, etc. Among his most famous works are “Turnovo”, Kukers”, “Rhodope Song”, “Fairy Tale”, “Music”, “Rosеgathering”, and others. Besides being part of private collections, Marin Varbanov’s works belong to a number of galleries in France, China, Japan, the USA. In Bulgaria his works are the metalwork in the underpass of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, and “The Thracian Door” in Boyana Residence. Three times Marin Varbanov was awarded national awards for culture – in 1964, 1967 and 1974. He is also granted the Order of Cyril and Methodius, 2nd degree in 1972. Marin Varbanov dies in Beijing in 1989.

1975 – He established the tapestry section at New South University, Sidney, Australia; He moved to Paris together with his family

1981 – He became a professor at the Academy of Arts in Sofia

1983 – The family moved to Beijing

1986 – He founded the Institute of Modern Textile in Hangzhou

1989 – He died in a hospital in Beijing on 10th July
